What Happened To The Country White Trash?

Since my divorce six years ago, I began to frequent the Flea Markets around the Westside of Jacksonville Florida. At that time I had just lost my job, I was penniless, and living/renting a friend’s third bedroom of his house. Money was so tight that I used my son’s baby trailer on the back of my bicycle for hauling groceries from the grocery store because I had to choose between gas for the car or groceries to eat. I was just a breath away from financial proceedings. After 2 months, I found another job and began to buy some of life’s necessities and start my life again. With the available money I had, Wal-Mart seemed expensive so I decided to try the local Flea Markets. For the price of one pair of work boots at Wal-Mart, I was able to buy a similar pair of boots, a bag of white socks, soap, and a small animal toy for my son. This is no mock against Wal-Mart but I was starting from scratch with very few dollars in my pocket. Just having the life’s necessities were more important than quality at that time.

As time progressed life got better but my son and I still enjoyed going to the Flea Market every Saturday morning. It became a family tradition. I rebuilt my collection of construction tools, bought new linen & towels, and nice furniture for my apartment. My son enjoyed the animal vendors, novelty toys, and the carnival like food. The whole atmosphere was fun; the open market smells, the sounds, the bartering, and observing the entire spectrum of social/economic lifestyles. A particular social/economic lifestyle never ceased to humor me, which I will term ‘Country White Trash’.

The ‘Country White Trash’ male species common characteristics were:

·  70’s long hair covered by a confederate flag doo-rag

· T-shirt with a confederate flag, pit bull, or a saying that included a one of the seven words you typically can’t say

·  Jeans and boots

· Wearing 93 octane cologne (actual petroleum from working on their vehicle in the Flea Market parking lot)

· Scrawny physique

·  Distinct Southern dialect

· Drinking Natural Lite or Busch beer at 10:00 in the morning

The ‘Country White Trash’ female species common characteristics were:

· Camero haircut hiding the love marks on her neck

· Tank top trying to contain the D plus chest

· Wide as tall physique with a potbelly hanging over her mini-shirt

· Distinct Southern dialect

· A child on each hip and screaming obscenities at her other children who can walk

Individuals of pallor could proudly say that our low class had a very well defined culture. After two years, I financially recovered from my divorce and my close encounter with financial proceedings. My son and I continued to frequent the local Flea Markets for 4 ½ years before our interest took us on other adventures like kayaking and fishing.

Last month my son and I decided to check out the local Flea Market and look for a pet Corn Snake from the animal vendor. Immediately after walking onto Flea Market premises, we both sensed something was very wrong. What happened to our beloved ‘Country White Trash’? They were there but it was a completely different culture. The ‘Country White Trash’ had assimilated into the black thug persona.

White males were walking around with the pants past their tail end keeping them up by holding on to them. Hats worn backwards replaced doo-rags. Heavy jewelry over tank top shirts. Women’s camero hairstyle was replaced by a beehive hairdo and colored with non-natural colours. Frankly I found it very disheartening listening to white people talk inner city Ebonics. Even all the ‘Country White Trash’ merchants were replaced with inner city clothing, speaker shops, and blings.

What happened to the ‘Country White Trash’? Was White Guilt too over whelming? Did Barack Hussein Obama’s Presidential campaign brainwash them? I am sure going to miss those Cajun favored boiled peanuts.
