I have realized lately that I am an aged man who has little patience for others except for my son. I refuse to spend any effort on an idea that is not time tested or a worldview that does not match mine. I am quick to get irritated when someone with no experience thinks they have a better idea than me and they are condescending about it. Typically when the individual is condescending, they are attempting to test an irrational worldview/philosophy at the expense of others. When my health, life, and wealth are at stake, I always follow my life's learned lessons from my military service and age.
I think I finally understand why I appear to be radical in many eyes when I am only applying my life to time tested principles about human nature and/or learned cause & effect. It seems to me that many people prefer to use DENIAL as a warm blanket. People don't like to label things accurately because that may create some responsibility/accountability for them to take action. When I speak my ‘unvarnished’ facts, I believe it makes people feel like I am ripping the blanket off them and exposing them to the cold. The blanket of DENIAL can only be safely removed by the individual(s) under it.
All I can say is “To thine own self be true”... I refuse to change the message because others are uncomfortable. Discomfort can be the catalyst for really necessary improvements whether the individual wants to acknowledge it in public or private.
Since the 1990’s, I have observed a large number of individuals and/or political action groups blindly forward their agenda no matter how absurd the reasoning is. I like to call this era of America history the ‘Age Of Ideologue’.
Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1)
i·de·o·logue
–noun
|
a person who zealously advocates an ideology. |
The consequences of the idea are unimportant. The important thing is that the idea is implemented for the sake of implementing the idea. If the cause and effect contradicts human nature, human nature will be forced to abide to the experimental ideology.
For example Liberalism (Socialism), we keep hearing if America just had the correct individuals running the government, just another adjustment policy change, or more funding for the entitlement Socialism will work this time. How many times does American want to attempt Liberalism before it realizes it does not work? Human beings are good-natured beings that desire to accumulate belongings but take away the ability to accumulate belongings and the human spirit to ceases to want to achieve. 5000 years of documented human history proves this cause and effect relationship.
Now back to my story. Since I was getting tired of combating crime on my own, I thought I might join a neighborhood crime watch organization. Since RADO (Riverside Avondale Development Organization) was starting a new neighborhood crime watch organization I thought I would attend. During this time the Florida Property Tax Amendment was being proposed and debated. It is my belief that Jacksonville Sheriffs Office was allowing the crime in Jacksonville Florida to escalate at the expense of the taxpayer’s safety so the taxpayer would scream against the Florida Property Tax amendment. The City Of Jacksonville was fighting against any proposed tax cuts.
My reputation for fighting criminal elements as a landlord in the neighborhood preceded me to the RADO meeting. I was not welcomed there and was shut down when I attempted to speak my opinion.
The RADO meeting organizer wanted to organize block party cookouts. If the criminal elements felt welcomed as a neighbor, they would assimilate into the neighborhood as a contributing neighbor. Criminal elements are to be treated as ‘humans’. The crime watch will not ‘profile’ criminal elements Ya right, that is really going to work.
Place neighborhood watch signs on the utility poles. I reminded the group that the criminals are so bold in the recent smash and grab burguries in Avondale that they pose in front of the security cameras. A sign is really going to scare them off.
Go over to the properties were the criminal elements are know to reside and rake their yards and haul all the trash to the curb. A clean property is a strong motivator to force them to vacate the premises. Group members will not carry firearms. Ya right, that is really going to work. If the criminal element retaliates for my trespassing, am I going to defend myself with a rake?
Call the City Of Jacksonville to install more streetlights. This idea I agree with. When I was doing urban renewal on Post Street, I installed 300w and 500w security lights around the entire building. The criminal element curtailed its activity on the outside of the apartment building. The neighbors were not pleased with me but they understood what I was doing.
Keep calling the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office every time you witness criminal activity. Ya right, if the JSO is refusing to respond now, how is calling more going to motivate the JSO? I believe it is insanity to keep doing the same tasks and expecting a different outcome. The squeaky wheel does not always get the grease.
After the RADO meeting, I realized that I was better suited to fighting crime on my own. I was going to combat the bad elements in a time-tested manner that has been successful to me.
The next day the following email was distributed from RADO:
First of all, my apologies to those of you who get this message multiple times. I decided to send this re-cap out to everyone (and some of my lists have duplicates), with the request that anyone who was unable to make it to the meeting, but is still interested in getting involved please reply to this email and let me know. If I don’t get a reply to this email I won’t continue to send you the information.
The meeting lasted about an hour and was very productive. About a dozen neighbors were present, plus myself and Officer Barnhart from JSO.
We came up with a few ways to proceed.
- 1) Start an email ring whereby we communicate reports to one another. That means, if you call JSO, you also email the ring to let everyone know what’s happening. Also, even if you don’t call JSO, but have a question about suspicious activity, you email the ring to spread the word. Based on replies to this letter I will set up the email group later this week.
- 2) Share the contact information of known and trusted group members, in the form of both maps with names and phone numbers, as well as a phone-tree list, and make a commitment to keep one another posted about suspicious activities.
- 3) Schedule a clean-up and cookout to get neighbors together. We’ll care for the physical state of the neighborhood and get to know one another a little better at the same time. Increasing connections between neighbors is one of the best ways to stay safe, plus it’s fun! This will happen sometime in the next month or two, and will be repeated quarterly.
We also committed to do a few particular things:
- 4) ALWAYS CALL JSO to report suspicious activity. Our area will get more attention if more calls for service are placed. The non-emergency number is 630-0500.
- 5) ALWAYS CALL THE CITY to report minor code violations such as trash in yards or overgrown weeds. The number for general city information is easy to remember: 630-CITY Cracking down on minor violations reduces the likelihood of more significant crimes developing.
- 6) This week, CALL WARREN JONES (City Council member for district 9) to ask him to put up new street lamps along Ernest Street, especially near West Street, where currently it is extremely dark. His number is 630-1395, and his email address is wajones@coj.net I recommend calling instead of emailing, and please be nice. Explain that you’re part of the new Neighborhood Watch group (which he has been informed of).
- 7) Come to the next meeting of the group, which I propose for February 12th, same time, same place (more chairs!).
Again, if you’re receiving this email and would like to continue to be involved, please reply and let me know.
Thank you to everyone who came out. I feel like we’re off to a very good start.
Take care,
Jennifer McCharen
RADO
I was not going to subject myself to a social experiment to a non-experienced condescending twit who is against guns for protection who thinks a rake and a broom on a criminal element's property is going to chase them away. It is absolutely foolish to view these people as 'human beings' as Jennifer refers them as. I do not think the neighborhood watch group understands the aggression and cruelty the criminal elements are willing to exercise. Once you kick that hornet's nest you better have the fortitude to protect yourself. I am not hesitant to use the same force and cruelty as the criminal element. That is how I cleaned out the 4-unit apartment building on Post Street.
So I responded to RADO:
Jennifer,
Well yesterday's RADO crime watch meeting was a nice to meet your neighborhood residents exercise. As a crime watch initiative, I hope you the best. Expressing the idea of playing nice and not profiling is a nice and naive worldview.
When I purchased and cleaned out the Post Street building for prostitution and drug distribution I combated the bad elements in a manner of force that they understood. The bad element does not play by the same rules of engagement as the law abiding citizen. The JSO is so concerned about the RADO initiative they sent a 2 month JSO veteran to the meeting. It does not say very much about their commitment to fighting crime.

RADO quickly responded back:
David,
It’s not at all naïve to follow the law, and profiling is against the law. I don’t think you understand this. Police officers are, by law, limited as to what they can do, and that is appropriate. I don’t trust anyone with a gun, not even those hired and mandated to “protect” me. Also, our sheriff’s department is under-staffed. This also affects what they are capable of doing. Bottom line, we can sit and complain about those problems or we can start organizing. The stuff we talked about doing last night has a proven track record nationwide. Neighborhood watch reduces crime. If the folks “in charge” aren’t getting the job done then we as residents must do it.
So I’m sorry if you were frustrated by the meeting last night, and I wish you the best in fighting the problem on your own, should you choose not to participate with us. Of course, as a neighbor, you are and will always be welcome. But as a human being, you are free to pursue your own creative approach to the problems around you. Who knows, Dave? You might have the right approach. We are going to continue to meet and organize as a group.
Please let me know if you’d like to remain on the contact list. I’ll happily remove you if that’s your choice.
Best,
Jennifer
My final response to RADO:
I have been very successful as a landlord for the past five years. When my health, life, and wealth is at stake, I will follow life's learned lessons from my military service and age. Please remove me from your distribution.

It is going to be fun to watch these ideologues try to implement and test out their idea, which defies criminal element nature. I sure hope they are ready for the consequences.
